Is your agent bio holding you back?

Whether you’re a brand-new agent just getting your start in the industry, a veteran looking to take your business to the next level, or a broker who works with a dozen agents every day, your story matters.

No matter what area of the real estate industry you work in, your bio is your opportunity to explain why you got into real estate and why you should be trusted with the job. Your story is why homebuyers will choose you and not the competition, why a brokerage will call you in for that second interview.

So is your professional bio adding value or holding you back?

Three Keys to a Great Agent Bio

What makes you…odd?

We’re putting this item first because far too often overlooked. Your professional bio should not be a laundry list of your academic and professional accomplishments, because no matter how impressive they are, they don’t give the reader anything they can hold onto or relate to.

To connect with your reader, you need to show them who you really are. We’re all a bit odd. Share your odd side and you immediately create a sense of trust with your reader.

Did you play flute in your high school marching band? Put it in there. Do you devote five hours a week building a model train set? Share that information, pronto! Are you obsessed with Star Trek? Beam it up, Scotty!

If you can’t think of what to write down, start by creating a list of the following:

  • 5 adjectives that describe you
  • 5 action verbs that describe what you do
  • 5 things you do that other agents don’t do

Consider your foundation story

Everyone in real estate got here in a different way. Everyone has a different foundation story. Your foundation story is one of the things that makes you unique.

What is it about you and your life experiences that made you the ideal person for the job you do? Did you have a moment where you discovered this is what you wanted to do? How did you get here? What made you this way?

These are the deep questions that answering will allow you to write your foundation story.

Define your dreams and role

Business today must be greater than business. It must be aspirational, aimed at making not only the business better, but they world better, too. So who do you want to help, and what do you want to achieve?

Try and avoid the cliche of “helping Americans achieve the dream of home ownership,” as this is in nearly every agent bio ever written. You can stick with that sentiment, but be specific and put it in your own words and flesh it out with an anecdote or two to make it unique.

If your agent bio has these three elements, you’re set!

How a Realtor Sold 3,556 Homes in 1 Year

Ben Caballero, a realtor and broker in Addison, TX, has been selling homes since 1960. But it was only in 2018 that he was inducted into the Guinness Book of World Records for achieving “the most annual home sales transactions through MLS by an individual sell-side real estate agent.”

What does the most look like? 3,556 homes in one year. 296 homes a month. 10 homes a day worth $1.44 billion in a year. How did he do it?

How to Sell a Home Every Hour

OK — usually when something sounds too good to be true, it is. This is no exception. Caballero really did sell that many homes in one year, but not in the way you might think.

Caballero owns a company called HomesUSA.com that specializes in posting newly built homes on the multiple listing service faster than anyone else. A builder submits a request, and in a few minutes they have the request processed. After that, Caballero’s work is almost done. Buyers or the buyer’s agents click on the listing and are automatically put in contact with the builder’s agent. They meet and complete the transaction, Caballero receives a flat fee and moves onto the next transaction.

So that’s the how. Now how can you, another real estate agent, do something similar? According to Cavallero, the answer is taking advantage of any and all new technology that can make your job easier. Just 20 years ago, he comments, listings would arrive in a physical book with a couple tiny black-and-white pictures. Now, with the MLS, you can see 50 or more homes according to specific parameters, in dozens of pictures in stunning color, and receive notifications when prices change.

2018’s Fifty Best Markets for Realtors

The best real estate agents in the country earn over $100,000 a year. Though skill and tenacity have a lot to do with success, so does being in the right place at the right time. To that end, Fit Small Business performed an analysis of the biggest 50 metropolitan centers in the United States to determine which were the best markets for realtors.

Their report took into account eight weighted metrics, drawing from sources including the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Trulia, Zillow, and the United States Census Bureau:

  • Mean annual wages
  • Percent of sales that were ‘flips’
  • Percent of listings with price reduction
  • Days on market
  • Inventory measure
  • Location quotient
  • Median price cut percentage
  • Median sales price of homes

The Top 10 Best Markets for Realtors

1.) Los Angeles – Long Beach – Anaheim, CA

No surprises here that Greater LA is considered best among the best markets for Realtors. It scored high in every metric examined. Realtors earn major commissions per sale. Despite the large inventory, homes only last 64 days on the market. LA realtors earn an average of just over $63,000 a year.

2.) Boston, MA

Realtors in Beantown earn an average of $67,400 per year thanks to high median sales price of $464,100. It also ranked in the top 15 in four other metrics.

3.) San Francisco, CA

Real estate valuations in San Francisco are through the roof. So are Realtor salaries. The average San Francisco Realtor pulls in over $96,000 a year.

4.) Chicago, IL

Great home supply, excellent time-on-market, and a high percentage of “flips” make the Windy City a great place to be a Realtor in 2018.

5.) Washington, D.C.

The nation’s capital is friendly to Realtors, who earn $62,320 a year thanks to good inventory and high median sales price.

6.) New York, NY

New York has four categories in the top 10, which explains why Realtors there earn more than anywhere else in the country: $97,610 a year,

7.) Denver, CO

Homes only stay on the market around 67 days in Denver, and Realtors are handsomely rewarded for their hard work, earning fourth-most in the nation: $78,630 annually, on average.

8.) Miami – Fort Lauderdale, FL

Miami Realtors do quite well in sunny Florida, earning $72,380 per year, eighth best in the country.

9.) San Jose, CA

The capital of Silicon Valley, San Jose is a somewhat small market compared to the others on this list. Yet median sales price is a whopping $1,165,000. Realtors in San Jose earn a respectable $62,300 annually.

10.) Riverside, CA

Low competition is one reason Realtors do so well in Riverside. A median sales price of  $339,000, 13th among the 50 largest metro areas, is another.
